Bobcats up spending down: BOE meeting

News

As the county moves through the first quarter of the fiscal year, Gilmer County Schools
remain under 25 percent of spending.

Revenue however is stifled because of how little property tax—under one percent—has
been collected. After the Gilmer County High School defeated Dalton 15-14, the Bobcats will travel to
Grady High School in Atlanta tonight to participate in the first round of the State playoffs.

There will be a shuttle service provided for a nominal fee for parents traveling to the
game.

With several programs in place such as the Georgia Learning Resources System,
Gilmer schools have seen a vast increase in students reading ability.

Through the GLRS grant, students at Gilmer High who have previously fallen through
the cracks yet are ashamed of their poor reading level have the ability to approach a
newly placed representative—paid for through a recent grant—and seek help.

The program helps students at all reading levels through the representative’s expertise
and also buying books students are interested in reading with grant money.

Since this grant and representative have been in place there has been many students
benefit from the opportunity.

“Can you just help me learn to read the driver’s manual? I’ve failed that test twice now
and that’s something I want to do before I graduate from high school,” said a Gilmer
High School student benefiting from the program.
