A Possible Drug Delivery Truck

Featured Stories, News

At approximately 9:00 a.m., Ellijay City Police Officer Brian Troglin attempted to pull over a white delivery truck. Troglin said the truck had no visible tag.

Officer Troglin followed the truck traveling 515 north. Troglin hit the lights at 515 north and old 5 north. Troglin then hit the sirens and moved back and forth to make sure the driver could see him in his mirrors.

Troglin gave the driver several opportunities to pull over. When the truck refused to pull over Troglin radioed in to have Fannin alerted that this truck was travel north to the county line.

The truck driver pulled over about one mile before Fannin county, 8.7 miles from the time Troglin turned on the lights.

When FYN arrived on the scene several Ellijay, Blue Ridge and Fannin County Sheriff cars had 515 north closed and the Truck surrounded. We first spoke to Ellijay Chief Larry Callahan. Callahan said that the driver and passenger were both Hispanic males. The driver was under arrest for failure to stop. The driver had no paperwork for his cargo.

Troglin asked the driver for the paperwork. When the driver could not provide any paperwork for the cargo Troglin asked where they were coming from and headed. The driver said they came out of Kennesaw going to Hiawassee, the passenger stated he was from Atlanta and did not know where they were going.

The truck had about five pallets of tortillas and tortilla chips. A K-9 unit was called in from Union County. Two Union county sheriff officers with Officer “Zoë” arrived to go through the truck. Zoë went through the entire truck inside and out, twice. The dog gave indicators that drugs were on the truck or had been on the truck at some point. Zoë sat at the battery box under the driver side cab several times. When in the truck, Zoë sat in the same corner where the battery box is located outside the truck.

Union County Sheriff officer’s told FYN they were looking into cocaine trafficking from Atlanta to Blairsville. They said this truck looked very suspicious and had all the characteristics of what they were on the look out for.

We asked Ellijay City Police Officer Leon Davenport what happens now. He said the two Hispanic males would be transported to the jail and the truck impounded.

He went on to say they would give all the information to the Drug Task Force and the District Attorney. From this point on a search warrant would be necessary to open the cargo.

FYN: What is suspicious is that there is no paperwork for the cargo. DOT Georgia state law requires a truck driver to be able to provide a cargo document any time he/she is pulled over. The documents should show the location the truck is coming from and the delivery point of the product. Also paperwork should reflect the product the driver is carrying along with the weight of the product. This driver had no paperwork.

Will they search the truck?
