Fetch Football Forum: Week 1 Recap

Opinion, Team FYN Sports

Week 1 of the college football season saw the SEC prevail in the majority of its games, as the conference’s members combined for a 10-3 record in the opening week (It’s important to note that one of those teams that lost—Vanderbilt—faced off with South Carolina). Here’s a recap of each team’s game starting with the school that had the best outing and ending with the team that had a day to forget.Alabama: 41-14 victory over Michigan. The Crimson Tide seemed to prove to the masses that they don’t rebuild; they reload. The Wolverines could do absolutely nothing against Alabama on Saturday, shown in the fact that the Big Ten team managed just 269 yards of offense (compare that to its 404 yard average last year). Make no mistake about it, Bama is still the team to beat in the SEC and will remain in that spot until someone actually does.

Tennessee: 35-21 victory over NC State. Volunteers head coach Derek Dooley needed a W in the worst of ways going into this one, and his team came through for him. Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray looked great passing the ball on Friday night against the Wolfpack, especially when it came to the deep throws, which he seemed to throw perfectly multiple times. With the offense finally clicking thanks to performances from the likes of JUCO receiver Cordarrelle Patterson and running back Marlin Lane, it’s no secret that Rocky Top seems to finally be rejuvenated.

Missouri: 62-10 victory over Southeastern Louisiana. The Tigers wasted no time in putting the Lions away in this one, as a four-touchdown outburst in the first quarter allowed the team to coast to their first victory as a member of the Southeastern Conference. Next up for the Tigers is a matchup against Eastern rival Georgia, a game that truly looks like could go either way.

LSU: 41-14 victory over North Texas. The Bayou Bengals had a bit of a scare in this one when starting quarterback Zach Mettenberger headed to the locker room following a vicious sack from a Mean Green defender, but other than this small hiccup it was smooth sailing for LSU.

South Carolina: 17-13 victory over Vanderbilt. The Gamecocks had a game to forget on Thursday night against the Commodores, but fortunately for them they were able to gut out an ugly four-point victory to start the season. Although the team still has an unblemished record in the young 2012 season, it’s abundantly clear that the Old Ball Coach needs to get his players to put more emphasis on taking care of the football.

Georgia: 45-23 victory over Buffalo. The Bulls hung with the Bulldogs for a longer period of time than the 92,746 fans at Sanford Stadium would have liked, but an awesome effort from true freshman running back Todd Gurley (227 all-purpose yards with 3 TDs) gave Georgia just enough breathing room in this one.

Florida: 27-14 victory over Bowling Green. The Falcons looked to play the role of spoiler in this one, but an interception by Florida defender Marcus Roberson at the beginning of the fourth quarter sealed Cinderella’s fate. Next up on the schedule for the Gators is Texas A&M, who will be looking to make a statement at home to start its SEC campaign.

Ole Miss: 49-27 victory over Central Arkansas. The Hugh Freeze era in Oxford started off with a nice win against a cupcake opponent, but as bad as the Rebels have been in recent history, any win is a win worth celebrating.

Mississippi State: 56-9 victory over Jackson State. The Bulldogs had no problem taking care of the Tigers in this one; they did, however, have some issues taking the field for the game.

Arkansas: 49-24 victory over Jacksonville State. The Razorbacks didn’t really turn any heads with this win over the FCS Gamecocks, but that’s usually what happens in games against cupcake opponents.

Auburn: 19-26 loss to Clemson. Give Auburn some credit for its effort in this game, as they hung with Clemson until the final gun sounded while playing with a brand new offensive and defensive coordinator. It will be interesting to see if head coach Gene Chizik is able to re-group the team and have them ready to play this Saturday against Mississippi State.

Vanderbilt: 13-17 loss to South Carolina. The Commodores had so many chances to top South Carolina in this one, but time and time again they failed to capitalize on the Gamecocks’ goofs. If Vanderbilt wants to make some serious noise in the SEC, quarterback Jordan Rodgers has to learn that 1) the team doesn’t necessarily live and die on every play made by him and 2) throwing the ball away from time to time is not a bad idea.

Kentucky: 14-32 loss to Louisville. Poor Joker Phillips. The Wildcats were really never in contention for the win against their biggest rival on Sunday, as the Cardinals took the lead with 3:11 left in the first quarter and never looked back. Although this year’s team looks outmanned and their head coach has a seat that’s growing hotter by the minute, they do have a killer basketball program, and that’s got to count for something, right?
