New Gilmer County Board of Education members (BOE) James Waters, Angela Thomas, and Jim Parmer took part in their very first BOE work session last night on January 10th, 2013.

The new members join already sitting BOE members Gary Hyde and Michael Bramlett on the board along with Gilmer County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey.

Yesterday’s BOE work session was held in order to review the agenda for the first regular board meeting the members will be part of on Tuesday, January 15th. Such items on the agenda at the new member’s first board meeting will be to elect a new Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and how they plan to serve the Gilmer County School system in school board meetings in the future.

Parmer, Thomas, and Waters defeated all three of Gilmer County’s BOE Incumbents Kathy W. Jones, Michael W. Parks, and Foster MacArthur in the July election on a platform that included providing better communication by the BOE to the citizens of Gilmer County.

When asked by FYN if this was something the new BOE still planned on following, new Post 3 Board Member Angela Thomas said,

“Yes, I do want the community to be more involved. I think it takes all of us to present ideas because we don’t know everything. I think it would be great to have the community come out to give us their thoughts. I’m hoping that people come out and start to be more involved.”

As well, new Post 1 Board Members James Waters and Post 2 Jim Parmer told FYN they were also looking forward to serving the community.

“I’m excited about being part of the board and looking forward to working with each one,”

said Waters

Parmer also told FYN he was pleased with how the first work session went,

“It was very productive with alot of discussion and I think that is the whole point with what a work session is. It’s acts of work and discussion and throwing out ideas so that as we look at it in a regular board meeting then we already kind of got an idea.”

Overall, it looks as though the new BOE is prepared to begin their duties as Gilmer County School board members with plans of bringing in help from the community. The first regular board meeeting will take place with the new board members this upcoming Tuesday, January 15th at 6:00 p.m.
