Visiting the Veterans Memorial Bridge

Community, Featured Stories

Memorial Day is on Monday, May 27th, which means that the days are quickly winding down until we reach the day dedicated to all of the veterans that have fought to protect the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Ellijay is no stranger to acts and signs of patriotism, and one does not have to look any further than the Veterans Memorial Bridge, located adjacent to the Gilmer County baseball fields, to see how important those who serve and have served are to the people in the county.
In order to celebrate Memorial Day appropriately this year, several planned events have been scheduled to take place at the Veterans Memorial Bridge. I was able to meet with Sandy Lyons and George Winn, two of the driving forces behind both the Bridge’s construction and its complimentary pieces that surround it, and learn about what it took to have the bridge built along with what Memorial Day means to them:

Mr. Lyons and Mr. Winn hope to see a good turnout for this year’s Memorial Day speakers and proceedings and would like to invite everyone to the Veterans Memorial Bridge at 10:45 a.m. for an hour’s worth of salutes and tributes to the greatest country in the world and to the men and women that gave everything to keep it that way.
