Election, Politics

In his public release, Sheriff Stacy Nicholson has announced his campaign for re-election.

Gilmer County Sheriff Stacy Nicholson announces to the Ellijay media outlets that he will be seeking re-election for a fourth term this year. Nicholson is a 25 year veteran of the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office. He was first elected in 2004 and will be running as a Republican.
Nicholson, 45, lives with his wife, Cynthia, and two of his three children. The third and oldest child was married this past December. He, his wife and two of the children are members of Sunlight Baptist Church.
Nicholson states that his objectives for the next four years are no different than the last twelve. He states, “I have spent the last twelve years promoting professionalism, accountability and a law enforcement agency that is engaged with its’ citizenry. We have worked tirelessly at this and I feel it’s very evident that we have succeeded. I don’t want to change that direction, only fine tune the agency in this endeavor. Today’s atmosphere, when it comes to law enforcement, is at an all-time low for my lifetime. It is imperative for Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office to continue operating in a transparent and accountable manner if the citizens wish to maintain pride and confidence in their law enforcement.”
Gilmer Sheriff’s Office sought and received its state certification in 2008, becoming the twelfth Sheriff’s Office in the State to have this distinction out of 159 counties. The Sheriff’s Office received its first re-certification in 2011, and then again in 2014. Each re-certification went smoothly which ensures the citizens of Gilmer County that the office is operating at the highest level of professionalism.
“Our state certification program is the foundation of our commitment to operational accountability to the citizens of our community. It sets the standard for our day-to-day operations, our training programs and our community educational programs,” says Nicholson.
The Sheriff states that fiscal accountability has been and will continue to be a top priority for the Office. He has now worked with four different boards of commissioners in his tenure as Sheriff to give Gilmer County citizens the highest level of law enforcement that the county can afford. The Sheriff said, “It’s been difficult through some of the years to maintain the level of professional law enforcement that Gilmer citizens deserve and demand, but managing our resources carefully we’ve accomplished just that.”
The Sheriff has continuously maintained a secure jail, secure courthouse, well trained and highly visible patrolman and a very capable, aggressive group of detectives, combatting crimes. All of these core aspects of law enforcement are part of what has deterred crime in the community and made Gilmer County one of the safest places to live.
“Maintaining the core aspects of the Office is imperative, but it’s just as important to engage the citizens with the peripheral aspects every chance we get to promote law enforcement. We do this in so many ways such as our very interactive Facebook page, Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy, School Resource Officers, Explorer program and the many community events that we take part in,” said the Sheriff.
The Sheriff likes to lead from the field. He stated, “the average day pretty much demands that I spend most of my time in or around the office. However, during an incident, I have to be ‘boots on the ground’ as much as I can alongside my deputies or detectives. I can’t stand sitting in a room listening to what’s going on when things are tense. I prefer to assign someone to sit there for me so that I can be there with my troops.”
Nicholson, recognized as a leader by his peers was elected as a regional vice president within the Georgia Sheriff’s Association in 2010 and served as such until 2015. In 2015, he was elected to the executive board of the Association to serve as secretary/treasurer. In the normal progression of the organization, he should take office as president of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association in 2018.
In closing, the Sheriff Stated, “I look forward to serving this community as Sheriff for the next four years. I assure you that just as the men and women of Gilmer Sheriff’s Office give you 110 percent every day, so will I.”
