Gilmer County swimmer Payton Woodring continued her banner career last weekend at the 2016 Georgia Age Group State Championships at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

A swimmer for Carpet Capital Aquatics Club, which is based out of Dalton and one of 58 teams at the championship, 12-year-old Woodring competed in 13 events. Out of that, Woodring set nine new team records for the 12U age group, including some that had stood since 1993. After the championship, she emerged as the 37th overall swimmer in the state (out of 69) in the age range of 11-14 year-olds and was fifth as a 12-year-old alone.

Woodring finished sixth in the 1000-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle events. She garnered eighth-place in the 500-yard freestyle and finished 10th overall in the 100-yard backstroke.

Her competitiveness extended to team relay events as well, as she joined three of her teammates in four events. The team set new records in all four events that Woodring participated in.

Next, Woodring will head back to Georgia Tech for the 2016 Age Group Sectionals, which will be held March 10-13. The event will be made up of swimmers from Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia, which comprises the Southern Zone of USA Swimming. Woodring will compete in eight different events at the Sectionals.
