Clear Creek Tennis Concludes Season Against Lumpkin, Pickens

The Clear Creek Middle School tennis team wrapped up a successful 2016 season this week, with matches at home against Lumpkin Monday and at Pickens Tuesday.

Against Lumpkin, the Lady Cats garnered a 3-2 victory, while the Bobcats swept the Indians 4-0. In the season finale at Pickens the next day, the Lady Cats downed the Dragonettes 4-1, while the Bobcats dropped their match to the Dragons by the same margin.

In girls singles action against Lumpkin, Lady Indian Marisa Miller defeated Hope Colwell 8-4. Emma Callihan garnered an 8-6 victory for the Lady Cats over Victoria Crotzer, while Kiersta Trammell gave Lumpkin an 8-6 win over Ellie Teague.

Doubles matches featured Josie Reece and Sarah Sheahan besting Jasmine Shubert and Anna Saine 8-2, while the duo of Morgan White and Alexis Sirmans beat Hannah Pulley and Brooke Waters 7-2.

Exhibition doubles matches included Jenna Cole and Lark Reece defeating Alyssa Stepp and Michelle Conner 8-3. Hannah Walker and Kimberly Holt bested Claire Stephens and Faith Marshall 8-2, while Jessica Futch and Kylie Callihan dropped a 4-6 affair to Pulley and Marshall.

Luke Wimpey picked up a 7-5 for the Bobcats against Kyle Trammell in boys singles action, while Isaiah Sharp downed Indian Kris Welltt 8-5.

Doubles boys matches featured Kaden Reece and Clay Ott downing Luke McElliott and Jacob Mulkey 8-0, while Braden Jenkins and Brady Sanford teamed up to defeat Caleb James and Mulkey 8-0.

In the final match of the season at Pickens, Emma Callihan defeated Jenn Prather 8-4. Sheahan downed Zoe Kirk 8-6, while Dragonette Emily Purello downed Ellie Teague 8-2.

Josie Reece and Colwell collaborated for an 8-1 win over Sarah Parks and Purello, while Cole and Lark Reece paired up to defeat Brianna Simpson and Kenzie Mays 8-4.

Dragonette Maddie Mays downed Alexis Sirmans in an exhibition singles match 7-4, while Walker and Holt teamed up to best Natalie Giddens and Carla Shaffer 8-4 and the duo of Kylie Callihan and Futch defeated Piper Duncan and Kate Wigington 8-0.

Pickens swept in boys singles action. Tucker Lowe beat Jenkins 8-3, Tristan Warren downed Kaden Reece 8-6 and Eli Bradford defeated Clay Ott 8-4.

Wimpey and Sanford teamed up for the lone Bobcats victory by triumphing 8-2 over Josh Murphy and Collin Kellogg, while Chase Baggs and Sharp fell 8-2 to the Dragons.

“I am extremely impressed this year with our Clear Creek Middle School tennis team,” said head coach Nancy Cantrell. “Although we had to work through bad weather most of the season, we ended up with a winning year. Our sixth and seventh-grade players have improved greatly this year and I look forward to their return. Our eighth-grade players, Luke Wimpey, Sarah Sheahan, Josie Reece & Will Teague showed great leadership and improvement with their skills throughout the season. The future of Gilmer High School tennis looks very promising.”

The Bobcats finish the season with a 4-1 record, while the Lady Cats complete the campaign with a 3-2 mark.
