The 12U Gilmer County Recreation and Parks Department softball league held a nightcap yesterday, between Team Watkins and Team Duvall.
When the dust settled at Field Five of the GCRPD, Watkins emerged with a hard-fought, three-inning 10-9 victory over Duvall.
The offense wasted little time in generating production for both teams. After Mallorie Lamirande garnered a leadoff walk, a triple from Emily Land scored the first Duvall run of the game. Later with two outs, a pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases. Brittany Damiano then doubled to raise the Watkins deficit. Another pair of walks led to more runs scoring on wild pitches, with Duvall coming out of the inning with a 5-0 lead.
Watkins responded with a six-run bottom of the first. After Ethanie Dantin drew a leadoff walk, Mattie Bryant was hit by a pitch and Cassie Martin singled to load the bases with no outs. Six straight walks brought runs home for Watkins, with all three outs recorded in-between on attempts to score.
Duvall managed to tie the game in the top of the second, before Watkins plated four more runs in the bottom of the second on bases-loaded walks.
Down to its last three outs due to time constraints, Team Duvall attempted a rally in the top of the third, plating three runs on walks and errors. However, a tag out at home capped off a one-run victory for Watkins.
