Noreen Thomas Resigns from Board of Education

News

Noreen Thomas has, today, resigned from Gilmer County Board of Education quoting, “an unanticipated personal situation has occurred.”

FYN spoke with Superintendent Dr. Shanna Wilkes who confirmed the Board will move forward with their June Meeting as a four-person board. Dr. Wilkes also stated the that another Board member will be appointed to the Vice Chair position at June’s Meeting which should also bring more information about how they will appoint a new member to return them to 5-members as well as any process to be followed. Dr. Wilkes stated she expected the Board will be appointing a new member to the position, which means there will be no election until the next election cycle for that seat.

On the resignation Dr. Wilkes said,

It was with great regret that I received Ms. Noreen Thomas’ letter of resignation from our board this morning. Her contributions and dedication to excellence for our school system will be greatly missed.

FYN has also contacted Probate Judge Anita Mullins, who is also the Election Superintendent, about the process. Judge Mullins stated Ms. Thomas was required to notify her about the resignation, but she is awaiting confirmation that the Board will appoint a replacement without an election.
