Feature of the Week from GHS Counselors: The Capstone Project: What You Need to Know

1. The Capstone Project is a graduation requirement set by the state of Georgia. This means that every senior must complete a Capstone Project before he or she can graduate.

2. The Capstone gives students the opportunity to explore a career of personal or professional interest.

3. The Capstone consists of several components. They include, but are not limited to, a project proposal, a resume, a cover letter, eight mentor hours and documentation, and a research paper. Students work on the components during advisement, except for the research paper, which students do as part of their English classes, and the mentor hours, which students arrange according to their own schedules outside school. Students will also do a presentation on their Capstone project. Students in the Move on When Ready program who are not on the GHS campus for advisement or English complete their projects outside of classes and turn them in electronically to their school counselors.

4. The Capstone is not as difficult as it seems. Students are provided with templates of the required documents and a rubric for how the research paper will be graded. Mentor hours may be done all at once or in increments.

5. Students may work ahead on project components. With the possible exception of the research paper, for which requirements are set in English classes, an enterprising student could complete the project in a short amount of time.

6. Students who participate in work-based learning programs are the only students who are not required to complete the Capstone. This is because work-based learning students are already completing their own version of career research and readiness projects. Please note that work-based learning students must be a part of the official work-based learning program through Gilmer High School. Students who have part time jobs outside of school but are not in the GHS work-based learning program must complete a Capstone Project.
