GHS Football, Gilmer High School, Team FYN Sports

This past Friday, the Gilmer Bobcats hosted the Lafayette Ramblers. The night began with recognition of all the seniors from the band, cheer, and football.

The whole first quarter consisted of three and outs from both teams and two turnovers from the Bobcats. The first turnover occurred when quarterback David Smith threw a interception in the end zone, and the second when running back Kell Kiker dropped the exchange from David Smith. The first quarter ended scoreless.

With 7:22 left in the second quarter, quarterback David Smith found wide receiver Griffin Cagle for a 46-yard touchdown. The PAT from Casas was good, putting the Bobcats up 7-0.

After the touchdown, the Ramblers started a drive, but linebacker Kamron Engler caused a fumble and ended up recovering it himself to give the Bobcats possession at the Ramblers 30-yard line.

Following the fumble, quarterback David Smith dropped back for the first play and throw an interception to strong safety Logan Teasley, who took it all the way down to the Bobcats 17-yard line.

After the interception, the Ramblers could not do anything with the ball as the Bobcats defense forced a turnover on 4th down.

The Bobcats began the next drive on their own 23-yard line with 2:33 left in the second quarter. The Ramblers defense responded, picking quarterback David Smith off for the fourth time, giving the Ramblers the ball on the 9-yard line with 1:43 left in the second quarter.

Following the interception, the Ramblers found the end zone on a 3-yard run by running back KaDarrin Ramsey, tying the score at 7 with 1:11 left in the second quarter.

The Bobcats were unable to score as time expired in the half.

The Bobcats received the ball to start the second half. OL/DL Levi Seabolt caught the kickoff and took it to the Ramblers 46-yard line. After a short drive, running back Kell Kiker ran a 28-yard touchdown, but the play was called back after a holding call. On the next play, a bad snap sent the ball over David Smith’s head where the Ramblers recovered the ball on the 32-yard line.

The rest of the third quarter consisted of three and outs on both sides.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Ramblers drove the field and kicked a 37-yard field goal, putting them up 10-7 with 11:54 left in the fourth quarter.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Ramblers offense found themselves on the Bobcats 3-yard line. The Bobcats forced a fumble and recovered it on the 3-yard line with 1:21 left in the game.

The Bobcats sent out their two-minute offense to try and win the game. Smith found Kiker for a first down putting the Bobcats at the 21-yard line. After the pass, David Smith dropped back, and unable to find anyone, he got the first down with his feet. He was hit late out of bounds, putting the Bobcats on the 46-yard line. With less than a minute left Smith dropped back again, but threw a interception, giving the ball back to the Ramblers on the 23-yard line with 24 seconds left.

The Ramblers took a knee to secure the game, giving them a 10-7 victory over the Bobcats.

After the game, an emotional head coach Wingard gathered the Bobcats around the G in the middle of the field. Keeping it short and simple, he said, “Guys, I know this is not what we wanted, but I am proud of you guys. Y’all worked hard all week.
