Mr. Vernon Dobbs West, 80, of Ellijay, died Saturday, December 3, 2016, at Piedmont Mountianside Hospital following a brief illness.

Vernon was born in East Ellijay to the late Newman and Flora Mae West. His brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Joyce West, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Mary Ellen (Bunny) West; his close friend and sister-in-law Louise Neligan, Chattanooga; Brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Lillian West, Ellijay; Mack and Ann West, East Ellijay; Ronnie and Sue West, East Ellijay; Larry and Gail West, Rex; sisters and brother-in-law Carolyn West Billue, and Susan and Joe Winkler, Atlanta; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Vernon was a 1957 graduate of Gilmer High School and attended Young Harris College. He was employed by the NA West Block Company for over 40 years. During those years, he was active in the Southeast Concrete Products Association. He was an active member of the Ellijay Lions Club, serving in several capacities. He was a member of the Good Samaritan Catholic Church.

Vernon enjoyed traveling, fishing, cooking, Georgia Bulldog football and growing red peppers. He was a very generous and honest person. He loved his family and Ellijay. He could be seen around town wearing his hat with a cigar in hand.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at the Good Samaritan Catholic Church, Ellijay, on Wednesday, December 7, at 11 am. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, December 6, from 4pm until 8pm at Bernhardt Funeral Home, Ellijay.

Flowers are accepted or contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 55 Church Street, Ellijay, Georgia, a charity that provides help to those in need in Gilmer County.
