The 2018-2019 season has started out with a bang for Gilmer High School with both the Cats and Lady Cats coming out of the gate with an 8-1 start. Also in their pockets is the fact that were undefeated in the annual Tip-off Classic this and were crowned tournament Champions.
After taking wins over the Gordon Central Warriors back on December 1st at home both Bobcats teams hit the road for this past Saturday for the final games between these two teams. Taking the court first was the Varsity Lady Cats and found themselves in a fight to keep the competition close through three periods of play. They managed to hang around close enough to turn up the heat as the fourth began. Down by 2 points at 36-34, the Lady Cats clawed their way to a 59-54 victory over the Lady Warriors in great comeback action. Playing a vital role in the win was Mallory Kiser who led the team in scoring with 11 points and going 2 for 2 from 3-point land and MaryLee Callihan who followed close behind with 10 points. This non-region win moved the Gilmer Lady Cats to 8-1 overall as they head to Pickens on Tuesday the 11th for rivalry/region game against the Nettes. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
Following the exciting girls game, it was time for the Varsity Bobcats to take the challenge from the Gordon Central Warriors. Previously the Cats had a double-digit win over the Warriors at 64-46 and was hoping Saturday’s game would play out the same way. And that it did. The Cats started fast and finished fast. They jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it. The Warriors had several opportunities to put points on the board but excellent defensive play by Carter Hice, Kell Weaver, and others on the floor through steals and blocked shots. Offensively for Gilmer Kell Weaver led all scoring with 26 points in the game. The 65-43 win over Gordon Central has the boys sitting at 8-1 with a date to play rival Pickens on Tuesday in a big region game. Tip-off will follow the Lady Cats and Nettes game.
