Gilmer’s “Grrrrreat” Against Dawsonville: “Cats” Clip Tigers Tail in OT Exclusive FYN Highlight Video

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team hosted and defeated the Dawsonville Tigers 26-20, in overtime. Tyler Bertolini scored a rushing touchdown to end the game on the Bobcats’ first overtime possession. Cameron Kephart intercepted Dawsonville’s Tyler Dominy in the end zone on the first play of overtime to give Gilmer the ball and set up Bertolini’s game winning score.The Bobcats’ first possession of the night ended with a punt. On the ensuing possession the Tigers 79 yard drive ended with a 24 yard touchdown catch by Bruce Clark on third and 12. Gilmer was down 7-0 with 1:40 left in the first quarter.

The teams traded possessions as both teams’ defenses forced the opposing offenses to scratch and claw for every yard earned. The Bobcat’s first touchdown came via trickeration, when Colt Henderson connected with Connor Webber on a 58 yard half back pass. The subsequent extra point tied the game at 7-7 with 10:09 left in the first half.

The Tigers came roaring back. After a touchback on the kickoff gave Dawsonville the ball at their own 20 yard line, Dominy narrowly avoided a sack by Anthony Stinebring to complete a deep bomb to Levi Whitmire that put the ball down at the Gilmer 32 yard line. Dawsonville was called for holding putting them in a second down and forever, when Dominy connected with Chris Sayer, on a pump and go, that put the Tigers at the Gilmer 17. The Tigers got the ball to the Gilmer five, before stalling. On fourth and two, Dominy’s roll out pass was caught by Keaton Toal for a touchdown. With 4:53 left in the half, the Tigers led 14-7.

The Bobcats were able to drive into the Tiger red zone, but a false start on fourth and one, caused the home team to settle for a field goal, and go into the half down 14-10.

Gilmer’s first second half possession began at the Bobcats’ 12 yard line, due to a holding call on the kick off return. The Bobcats proceeded to move the ball methodically down the field but came up short, when Eric Chavez missed a field goal with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.

The Bobcat defense held the Tigers’ offense to a three and out, and Gilmer took over the ball on the Dawsonville 44. Another time consuming drive, ended in zero points for the home team, as Connor Webber, was stopped just short of the first down on a fourth down fake field goal attempt. The Tigers took over on the Dawsonville four yard line.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Tigers’ offense had almost no possession time, having only ran five plays in the third. The Tigers got it’s initial first down of the half on Zack Martin’s run on third and long. The visitors quickly moved backwards following a false start and a sack by Clay McClure. However, a home team personal foul followed by a completion to Clark, gave the Tigers a first down at the Dawsonville 41.

Dawsonville ran off more than half of the fourth quarter clock; however, penalties stalled the Tigers drive, and the Bobcats took over with 5:30 left in regulation on the Gilmer 26 yard line still down 14-10.

Bertolini busted up the middle of the Tigers defense for eight yards on first down. Gilmer gained no yards on the next two plays. On fourth and two from their own 34 yard line, Marlin Hensley and Colt Henderson brought the Gilmer crowd to its feet, when they connected on a short pass that Henderson turned into a touchdown when he out ran the entire Tigers defense to record a 66 yard touchdown reception. With 3:45 left in the game, Gilmer had its first lead of the game, 17-14.

Dominy led the Tigers right down the field, finally connecting with Clark on a 27 yard touchdown pass. The Tigers missed the extra point leaving Gilmer the opportunity to tie the game with a field goal.

Down 20-17, with under a minute left in the game, Hensley took over and marched the Bobcats down the field completing five of six passes. With four seconds left on the clock, Eric Chavez tied the game with a 34 yard field goal as time expired.

Kephart’s aforementioned interception on the first play of overtime set Bertolini’s eventual game winning touchdown.
