Buccaneers Beat Both Bobcats’ Basketball Teams

The Gilmer High School Lady Bobcats and Bobcats basketball teams hosted the Lady Buccaneers and Buccaneers of Allatoona High School. The home teams went 0-2 as Allatoona’s ladies won 48-41, and the boys’ team won going away 68-29.The Lady “Cats” were done in by a barrage of three pointers. Allatoona raced to a 6-0 lead on two three’s. Ansley Mulkey made the score 6-2 with an assist from Jenna Parks. Another Allatoona three made it 9-2, before a 6-2 run by Gilmer saw the home team down 11-8 at the end of the first.

The Lady “Bucs” continued to hit from the outside, while controlling the defensive glass, limiting the Lady “Cats” to numerous one shot possessions. A 9-2 run by Allatoona saw the visitors lead 20-10 with just under four minutes left in the first half; however, Gilmer answered with a 7-4 run to close the half, down 24-17.

The Lady Buccaneers continued the outside proficiency shown in the first half, well into the second. Allatoona used to deep three’s to increase its lead to 30-19 halfway through the third period.

The Lady Bobcats began to respond due to being in the bonus early and an aggressive full court press. Parks’ steal in the back court which lad to a Samantha Mashburn basket, was followed by a back court by the Lady “Bucs.” The Gilmer press also forced a 10 second violation in the Lady Buccaneers’ backcourt. Gilmer trailed 37-24 at the end of the third.

With less than a minute played in the fourth, the Lady Bobcats were in the double bonus. Britton Farlow, hit two free throws that cut the lead to 10, 40-30. Bailey Charles’ steal and lay up cut the lead to six, 40-34, however, the Allatoona answered with yet another three point basket.

The Lady Bobcats never got closer than five, before finally falling 48-41. Bailey Charles led the Lady “Cats” with 12 followed by Farlow with 11.

The Buccaneer boys plundered the Bobcats almost from the very beginning of the game, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. Allatoona allowed almost no second chance points, Ryan Lowery’s put back basket, was the only second chance Bobcats’ basket of the first period. Allatoona led 15-6 at the end of the first.

The woes continued for the home team, as Gilmer was outscored 25-8 in the second period, allowing Allatoona to take a 40-14 lead into half time.

The “Bucs” came out hot in the second half as well, with a quick 5-0 run. The lead continued to increase at such a rapid rate, that both teams were subbing in back ups before the end of the third quarter.

Allatoona won 68-29, when it was all over. The Bobcats had no players reach double digit scoring, as Ryan Lowery led the team with seven.
