The Director of the Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority has issued a statement about comments made in a Gilmer County Board of Commissioners special called meeting last week about an issue involving the imposed impact fees administered by the EGCWSA. As reported, in the meeting questions were raised by the Gilmer County Board of Commissioners about the removal of the fees and the effect the fees might have on industry in Gilmer County. Post 2 Commissioner Danny Hall also requested that a meeting be held between Gilmer County, Ellijay, and East Ellijay to discuss the necessity of the imposed impact fees. However, in a statement today, the Director of the EGCWSA Emory DeBord, told FYN, “The water and sewer impact fees is a fee the authority adopted and the purpose behind those is to make new developments and the system upgrades necessary for those new developments without putting that burden on the existing customers. If we didn’t have the impact fees that we have in place now, we wouldn’t have the excess compacity and water and sewer to offer to anybody because all of those upgrades has been done with impact fee money.”

When it comes to the idea of a possible meeting between Gilmer, Ellijay, East Ellijay and the EGCWA, DeBord also responded, “My recommendation to them would be for there legal counsil to consult with ours because I think once there attorney spoke with ours, then they would realize it is not necessary to meet.”

At this time, according to Gilmer County Clerk Dianna Buttram, a meeting between Gilmer County, Ellijay, East Ellijay and the EGCWA has yet to be confirmed.
