East Ellijay Code Enforcement Officer Mack Wood says that with the passage of Sunday Sales in the city, the city will now place the item on the agenda at the November 13 East Ellijay City Council meeting and then once it gets adopted into the city’s ordinance, Sunday sales will go into effect the following Sunday.

“We have to make changes in our ordinance to change jurisdiction,”

Wood said.

Wood said this means that once the item is adopted, any restaurants offering the sale of alcohol “by the drink” will be allowed to sell alcohol from 12:01 p.m. until closing, however, any retail stores offering the sale of alcohol “by the package” on Sundays will be allowed to sell alcohol 24-7.

In addition, according to Ellijay City Hall, the city of Ellijay has also passed both the Sunday sales of alcohol “by the drink” and “by the package”, but at this time City Hall is still awaiting the numbers from the referendum.

However, Ellijay Mayor Al Hoyle said the allowance of Sunday sales of alcohol in Ellijay

“won’t be until January”.

Hoyle also told FYN that after speaking with the city attorney, the city is expecting to have its first reading of the new ordinance in November and the second reading, passing the item, in December.

The next Ellijay city council meeting is scheduled for November 18.
