Announcements, Community

Sandy Lyons, local avid patriot and founder of the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Gilmer County has announced the plans for the Veterans Day Celebration in Gilmer County.
According to Lyons, tonight, November 8th, the Rotary Club of Ellijay will be having a free Veterans Day Dinner at the Ellijay First Baptist Church located at 164 Dalton St. where registration will be at 5:30 p.m. and the meal will be at 6 p.m. Lyons says the meal is a good meal contributed by the local Rotary Club of Ellijay and anyone who has friends or family members that were or are Veterans are invited. Last year, almost 300 people were served at the Veterans Day Dinner.

In addition, Lyons says there will also be a Veterans Memorial Breakfast held at the Ellijay First United Methodist Church located at 75 McCutchen St on Friday, November 9th at 8:00 a.m. Following, the breakfast there will be a line up in front of the church around 10:30 a.m. where each of the veterans will then march up to the Downtown Ellijay Square and participate in a Veterans Day Ceremony at 11:00 a.m.

Lyons says this year’s Veterans Day Celebration will be different from last years as a tribute from the Cobb County ROTC is expected and also other vehicles and a flyover.

“It’s going to be a pretty good deal,”

says Lyons.

Afterwards there will be a Barbeque lunch following the ceremony for each of the veterans and their families at the Lions Club at 12:00 p.m. As well, A Veterans Ceremony will also be held at the Gilmer Nursing Home for all Gilmer Nursing Home Veterans conducted by the local Gilmer County Sons of the Confederacy at 3:00 p.m.

Lyons has been helping organize Veterans Day Ceremonies in Gilmer County since 1996. For more information about Gilmer County Veterans and their stories please visit www.gilmercountyveterans.us.
