“Senior Night” Sweep: Lady “Cats” Clip “Nettes” at Net

The Gilmer High School Lady Bobcats volleyball team hosted the Dragonettes of region rival, Pickens High School. The Lady “Cats” clipped the “Nettes” at the nets, sweeping both the junior varsity and varsity matches, (25-19, 25-21), and (26-24, 25-15) respectively. In between the JV and varsity matches the Lady “Cats” honored the five graduating seniors: Jenna Parks; Britton Farlow; Sarah Lambert; Darby Herald; and Harmony Malham, in a brief ceremony.The day began with the JV squads battling back and forth to the tune of four ties in the first eight points of the match; however after the home team took the lead at 5-4, after a failed Pickens return, Hannah Thomas’ ace sparked a 13-8 run by the Lady “Cats.”

With Gilmer leading 21-12 a 6-3 run by the “Nettes” cut the lead to six, at 24-19. A Jordan Luczynski dig for a kill won the first set the Lady “Cats.”

The second set began with a 4-1 run by Gilmer; however a 10-6 run by Pickens cut the lead to one, 11-10. After a failed Pickens serve, Kali Malham’s ace sparked a 7-1 run that put Pickens behind 19-12. The “Nettes” never got closer than three, as the Gilmer JV squad took the set, 25-21, and the match 2-0.

The aforementioned seniors were honored between the JV and varsity games, with head coach, Donna Parks, partaking in the last part of the ceremony as a parent to Jenna.

The varsity’s first set, began fittingly with, senior, Lambert scoring an ace to take a 1-0 lead; however, the “Nettes” nipped right back, sparking a back and forth battle that resulted in five ties, and four lead changes in the sets’ first 11 points.

A Pickens kill with the game tied 5-5, began a 7-1 run by the visitors that put Pickens up 12-6. A Parks kills started an 8-2 run that tied the game at 14-14 after a kill from Brooke Sims.

Over the next 20 game points, the two teams combined for four ties and three lead changes. With the game tied at 24-24, Gilmer scored the last two points taking the set, 26-24, and the match 2-1.
