Gilmer High School Wrestling Update

The Gilmer High School Bobcats wrestling team most recently competed at the Etowah Duals, finishing second after a third place finish at the Allatoona Duals, in both tournaments the Bobcats suffered one loss, to Woodland High School, only the first and second time Gilmer has succumbed to Woodland in during head coach, Sam Snider’s, tenor. The Junior Varsity team won the Etowah Duals going 5-1 on the day and finishing with a 60-15 win in the finals.At the Allatoona Duals the Bobcats rode an undefeated streak into the tournament, and maintained that streak until meeting Woodland in the semifinals, and falling 39-27. The “Cats” closed out the tournament with a win over the hosting Buccaneers for a third place finish.

The Etowah Duals began with the Bobcats winning with back to back beat downs, housing the Hoyas of Harrison and the Hornets of Hiram, 69-9 and 59-24 respectively.

Snider subscribed the matches thusly,

“In those two matches we only lost one match. I forfeited out so to not run up the score.”

Next Gilmer gave out lumps to Lumpkin, 39-27 before a semifinals match up with Chattahoochee. The “Cats” clobbered the Cougars, 51-6, with both teams forfeiting the last few matches to save the wrestlers for the next round.

The finals came down to the last two matches, with the Bobcats leading by six, 30-24. An overtime loss at 132 (three team points) and a technical fall (five team points) resulted in Woodland pulling out a two point 32-30 win.

Snider spoke about the day,

“Last time they [Woodland] beat us 39-27. We wrestled great as a team and was one second short of winning at 132 in regulation. Drew Dyer threw their kid to his back but only got two back points. He needed one more second. The JV went 5-0 and won the finals 60-15. Great day for our team.”
