The Gilmer High School Lady Cats basketball team started the week facing another region rival, the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders. Gilmer hosted SEW and came away with a two point, 56-54, victory. The Lady Cats controlled the first half. Gilmer ended the first period up 19-10 and went into halftime up 30-24; however, the Lady Raiders came out in the second half ready to play.

SEW took it to the Lady Cats controlling most of the third period. By the end of the third period the Lady Raiders cut the Lady Cats’ lead to one, 42-41.

SEW did not go down easy. The Lady Cats’ Bailey Charles had the hot hand when it counted, hitting four big free throws. This one would come down to the buzzer with the Lady Cats pulling out the region win 56-54.

Charles led Gilmer with 26 point on the night. She was 11 for 13 from the foul line and hit one 3 point shot. Whitley Reece came off the bench and to scorer 11. Emily Sanford was the third leading scorer with 9.

Foul trouble usually is the result of playing aggressive basketball and that was true for Megan Allen and Emily Reece, both with four fouls on the night played very strong defense.

Reece had three points on the night. Emily’s defensive style was to go get the ball and let nothing get in her way. One should be careful getting tied up with her over the ball because she will give the “that’s my ball look” that strikes fear in opponents.

Gilmer has struggled at the foul line against Dalton Saturday, and again versus SEW. Gilmer missed 15 free throws. This will have to change or it will catch up to them soon and may make the difference in a buzzer beater win or loss.

Friday night the Lady Cats travel to take on the Pickens Dragonettes. Come out and watch Bailey Charles as she closes in on 1000 career points.
