Gilmer Memorializes Soldiers

Featured Stories

Gilmer County, GA – Defying the 80 degree heat in Ellijay, local volunteers have banded together today to place memorial crosses on South Main Street. These crosses are set up for Memorial Day Monday. The volunteers have placed 817 crosses to date in order to commemorate soldiers who have served in American Wars starting in WWII until present and lived in Gilmer County.

The Gilmer Chamber of Commerce sponsors this event, but the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary have taken on the task of having these signs created, cleaned, maintained, and displayed.

These crosses will remain until next Thursday, at which time, volunteers are asked to return around 9:00am at Pricecutters Automotive Repair by Ace Hardware on South Main Street in order to properly take down and store the crosses until Veteran’s Day in November, at which time the crosses are planned to be put back up.

Ms. Jones was also excited to announce the county has given permission for them to place small flags on the crosses starting in November. Though, this will require many more volunteers to accomplish.

A special thank you to all the Volunteers who helped Memorialize Gilmer!
