The North Georgia Christian Academy held a basketball camp for those students, and some home schooled students, who plan on playing basketball for the Academy in the upcoming season.

Coach Robbie Cheatham oversaw the camp. He worked on various skills, such as passing, rebounding, shooting, and defense. Each day concluded with a camper being named camper of the day, as well as awards being given to those who won contests. Tripp Pierce won the lay up drill for the middle school age children, and Sarah Jane Gravely won for the high school age children. Logan Cheatham won the three point shoot out for the middle schoolers, and Jesse Dilbeck won for the high schoolers.

Cheatham acknowledged that due to the small student population (less than 150 students) he has to temper his expectations. His goals and expectations are not based on wins and losses but more so on the growth and development of a program that will be heading into just its third year of organized basketball.

“I want the community to see an organized and structured program.”

Cheatham expects the girls’ team to be a bit further along due to the depth of experienced players on the team.

“The girls are the more advanced team clearly, because they’ve got more players that have played before. I think our strength is defense. That’s always I what I emphasize. I want to play good defense. We play a variety of defenses,”

said Cheatham. He estimates that “at least 60%” of their points came off of take aways.

The boys team, while lacking the experienced players that the female counterpart, will boast, should have a size advantage that should be exploited on the board work. Cheatham expects to rely heavily on Jesse Dilbeck, who “got a double double almost every game.”

“We’re going to be relatively big inside,”

Cheathem said.

The teams do not play in a division due to the small stature of the student body and the relative youth of the program, however, there is consideration for joining a classification in the future.

Joseph Miller, a community coach, was shown gratitude.
