Cochran and Bowers Sign Intentions

Two Gilmer County athletes the coaches called “the hardest working guys we had on the football field” have signed letters of intent for the future college careers.

DSC05473Russell Cochran, a team captain, has signed with Faulkner University. Cochran held 158 carries for 778 yards. He also rushed for over 1,600 yards as a Junior and holds two all region Running Back positions.

 

 

DSC05483Thaddeus Bowers, also a team captain, has signed with Reinhardt University. Bowers played three positions as a senior. He collected 25 catches for 344 yards as a receiver, threw for over 500 yards and rushed for 328 yards as a quarterback, and pushed 23 tackles on defense and returned kicks. He also pulled all region position as both a Junior and Senior.

 

Both considered true leaders by their teammates and coaches, Athletic Director Rodney Thurman said he was “extremely proud of these two for choosing to continue their playing careers as well as attending great academic institutions.”

Bobcat Football Players Recognized On All-Region Teams

As the playoffs for football in the state of Georgia wind down, The individual regions select their All-Region Teams. This season, 13 GHS varsity football players were recognized on either the 1st Team, 2nd Team, or Honorable Mention.

 

2 Bobcats made it on to the 1st Team Offense. They are:

Jr. Levi Seabolt- OL

Sr. Thaddeus Bowers- ATH

 

2 Bobcats were selected to the 1st Team Defense:

Sr. Lucas Bramlett- DL

Sr. Noble Zuschlag- LB

 

2 Bobcats were named to the 2nd Team Offense:

Sr. Russell Cochran- RB

Sr. Alix Lopez- K

 

Sr. Kell Kiker (DB) was named to the 2nd Team Defense

 

6 Bobcats were selected as Honorable Mention. They include:

Jr. Kameron Engler- LB

Jr. Austin Lacy- DL

So. Dillan Ledford- P

Jr. Griffin Cagle- WR

Sr. Jake Parker- TE

Sr. Shane Bowman- DL

Bobcats Scratch Out Win to make Playoffs

Scratching and clawing, the Gilmer High School Bobcats football team brought the regular season down to 22 seconds before securing a AAAA playoff spot. The Gilmer Bobcats won friday night against the Heritage Generals 27-20. A playoff spot was on the line for both teams and the Generals did not go easy without a fight. (more…)

Bobcats Beaten by Dragons: 42-19

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team traveled to region rival Pickens High School Dragons. Both teams entered the game with identical one loss Region 7-AAAA and overall records, with Gilmer owning a five game winning streak. The streak came to a close as the Bobcats fell 42-19. (more…)

Bobcats Bumrush: Ramblers Routed 62-27

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team hosted the Lafayette Ramblers on “Senior Night.” The Ramblers entered the game 2-6 on the season and 0-4 in Region 7-AAAA. Conversely the home team was 6-1 and 3-1. The “Cats” cruised to victory, lambasting Lafayette 62-27, largely on the legs of Russell Cochran who rushed for a school record 319 yards and five touchdowns. (more…)

Bobcats Beat Bruins: Nips Northwest 33-30

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team hosted the Northwest Whitfield Bruins in the third game of Region 7-AAAA play. Both teams entered the game 1-1 in the region, the home team “Cats” clinched the clutch victory, with a 33-30 win, secured by a late Garrett Ridgon touchdown catch. (more…)

Bobcats Big on Road in Ridgeland: Pound Panthers 21-7

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team traveled the long road to Ridgeland High School for a region battle with the Panthers. The Bobcats came into the game 0-1 in Region 7-AAAA and 3-1 on the year, with the Panthers having the identical overall record but inverse region record. Both teams would leave the game 1-1 as Gilmer got the 21-7 road win. (more…)

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team defeated the Fannin High School Rebels 41-7 in the opening game of the season for both long time rivals. Garrett Rigdon’s 70 yard interception return began a route that featured four Russell Cochran rushing touchdown (42, 6, 23, and 30 yards) and a 55 yard touchdown run from Chris James. (more…)

Bobcats Trump Trojans “49-14”

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team took part in its second scrimmage of the year, with a trip to North Hall to take on the Trojans. The scrimmage featured a first half played with a game time clock and complete game play minus kick-off returns. Each team started drives on its own 30 yard line. The third quarter featured red zone work, and the fourth quarter saw the junior varsity and freshmen players getting playing time. The Bobcats went full beast mode on the Trojans, “winning” 49-14. Gilmer Gets in the Ring with Ringgold

The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team hosted the Tigers of Ringgold for a preseason scrimmage. The scrimmage consisted of a first half that featured each team running 10 play drives before switching, and a second half that saw a timed third quarter scrimmage between the varsity squads and a fourth quarter reserved for reserves and young players. On a chilly Friday night in North Georgia, the Gilmer High School Bobcats football team hosted the region rival Pickens High School Dragons. Gilmer, coming off of a win against Cass, was looking to win its sixth game of the year. Pickens was coming off of a loss to Cedartown, and hoped to get back on track with a win against the “Cats.” In a game that was close throughout, the Dragons faltered down the stretch allowing the Bobcats to pull away, 17-0, for the fifth straight win against the Dragons. The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team traveled to Cass High School to take on the Colonels. Coming off of a bye week, Gilmer was ready to take the field and fight for a win. It was homecoming night for Cass, but the Colonels would fall to the strong option attack of the “Cats,” as Gilmer cruised to a 30-13 win. (more…)

Gilmer Routs Ramblers 35-7

After receiving their first loss of the year, the Gilmer Bobcats looked to get back to its winning ways Friday night in a Homecoming faceoff with the Ramblers of Lafayette. The Bobcats bounced back from the loss to Dalton, with a 35-7 rout of the Ramblers. The Gilmer defense was stingy all night, not giving up a touchdown, until the outcome was well past decided.
