The NCAA ruled that Auburn University quarterback and Heisman hopeful, Cameron Newton, is eligible to play even though his father, Cecil Newton, was found to have committed a violation when he, and former Mississippi State player, Kenny Rogers, conspired in a pay-for-play scheme while Cameron was being recruited by Mississippi State.Because a violation occurred, Auburn declared Newton ineligible on Tuesday, per NCAA rules. Auburn applied for and was granted reinstatement for Newton. The NCAA ruled that based on there was insufficient evidence to support the notion that Cameron Newton had any knowledge of his father’s plans.
In a press release, Kevin Lennon, vice president for academic and membership, said, “”Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time, we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement.”
Cecil Newton will have limited access to Auburn athletics, while Kenny Rogers has been disassociated from the Mississippi State program.
