Possible $2,000,000 Environmental Disaster in Gilmer County

A local environmental disaster could cause Gilmer County to face a potential $2,000,000 clean up project as sludge has been dumped into local water sources.

Atlanta Gas and Light was undertaking a natural gas line project on 282 and Tails Creek at Roberts Ridge. The company contracts installation of these lines, this time using contractor SEC (Southeast Connections) out of Austell, Ga.

Two weeks ago, James Holloway, with Gilmer County Planning and Zoning, held a pre-construction meeting with SEC and explained to them that they had to dump their sludge in a pre-approved dump site.

FYN’s current understanding of sludge occurs when installing gas lines. An unknown solution is pumped through pipes while they are run in the ground, allowing pipe installation without digging up the ground. The “pump truck” then pumps the mud and solution back out as sludge out of the ground and hauls the substance to their choice of permitted dump sites.

Holloway told FYN that he was driving south on 515 Thursday as he looked off the highway, right before Old 5, and recognized a sludge pump truck. At this point, he realized the only sludge truck he knew of in the county was designated for the gas line project.

As he investigated, turning down Old 5, he discovered the truck pumping sludge over a hill leading into a tributary which then leads into Running Town Creek, a state trout stream.

FYN investigated the site and inquired with the property owner, James Moore, about the dumping. Moore declined to comment only offering repeated demands to vacate his property.

An unnamed representative from SEC told FYN several more crews were headed in for clean-up and the EPD (Environmental Protection Department) of Georgia was notified.

Holloway has also confirmed EPD’s notification.

Gilmer County must now await the clean up process by those responsible. A review of this disaster and subsequent clean up orders by the EPD will occur on Monday, December 14.

Further, Gilmer County has issued a “Stop Work Order”  for the current project at Roberts Ridge to the company, SEC, and its Area Manager, David Wooten.

Currently, reports are coming that Jonathan Moore, property owner James Moore’s son and driver for SEC, was the driver of the pump truck and that SEC is now pumping the sludge back into the truck to be transported to an approved Dump Site in Catersville.

  • Good reporting job.. I certainly hope the burden of cleanup will be strictly on the company that did the deed and not Gilmer County Taxpayers.. The comany , SEC, I think you called it should certainly have liability insurance for stupidity like this. I say they pay the bill then get out of Gilmer and don't come back..

  • George I agree with your sentiment but, in this case it may be misplaced or at least a father and son are also guilty along with the company. The truck drive most likely gets paid per load removed from the construction site. Then by dumping on his father's property he doesn't have to pay disposal fees. The company, father, and son are probably all in collusion in this case. The companies insurance will not pay for criminal actions by a policy holder.

  • What about the fish in the creek that will die in this process. We live down on towns creek and my grandkids love to fish. People don't think about how their careless actions effect other people.

  • Tip of the Ice Burg for Georgia.
Here is the way the sewage con works. You will hear "We are going to spend 8 million to fix the sewage problem and produce Class A bio solids. 10 million latter they have a system of nice shinny chrome reactors or digester if that much. They market it as the end all beat all solution to the sewage problem. Class A Exception Quality or worse.
But wait, they over look the underlying problem of hazardous chemicals and what they create when they rid just some pathogens. I miss spoke, they know exactly what is left in this toxic goo and there in lies the SEWAGE CON! Imagine a pathogen bug that defies killing. Imagine hazardous chemicals combined and heated up in a digester. Now imagine the EPA and EPD saying it is too expensive to test for every chemical or pathogen in bio solids.
Now tell citizens farmers and land owners that bio solids are safe and beneficial and leave out the hazardous chemical concentration. Con?
This stream is nothing compared to what they are doing in Jefferson County GA. One guy buying up land just to dump SEWAGE SLUDGE ON TOP IT and then running cattle you eat on it to forage picking up these contaminates. JUST WHERE DO YOU THINK THE RUN OFF GOES? Now GA Voters have to trust Their Environmental Protection Division (EPD) that could not regulate a hot dog stand with their health. It is call corruption.
Try asking your EPD this question: Is the EPA and EPD allowing chemicals of unknown amount, concentrations and degree of hazard onto farms, ranches and forest without their knowledge or consent and watch for a deer in the headlight look.
Tip of the ice burg in this county including the beautiful contaminated state of Georgia.
    GOOD LUCK WITH IGNORING THIS.

    • The more of us that stop eating meat, the sooner our environment will be cleaned up. Remove the profit in it
      .

  • The EPD needs to do something about this. But unfortunately .... runs downhill and we the taxpayers will inherit this mess. The EPD is a waste of tax payer money.

  • It must be contaminated stuff because I noticed they had 100's of workers out there even today on Sunday. What I don't understand is why Mr Moore would let contaminated sludge be dumped on his property. It looks like it caused more harm to their home place than good. I'm sure residents down the creek are not too happy with their choice of practices. What a mess. What a shame to see this in our county.

  • I was wandering what was going on when we drove by yesterday. I noticed someone above said that the father and son were getting paid by loads dumped. Why in the world would you pollute your home for a little cash. I hope charges get filled in the proper manner so that this can be stopped in our county. It happens too often. People in this community get away with so much destruction. It's time we all realize that land disturbances can cause long term damage and lessons need to be learned about proper land maintainance and development. I hope justice is served in this case for all involved.

  • Georgia EPD has been so under funded that they really cannot regulate or monitor anything to protect human health or the environment. That leaves us to go to our local governments and tell them we want them to protect us and our land, water and air on which life depends. Nationwide human health has been so de-valued by all state and federal agencies created to protect us, that we are living in a time where our children are at risk of never being able to achieve their potential because of normal IQ loss (dropped from 100 to 93), and now in the US 1 in 45 boys will be born with a form of Autism says the CDC, as well as cancer rates growing 1% per year since 1970. We are allowing polluting industries and municipalities to poison us and future generations. This has to stop if we care about each other and our children and grandchildren. For the first time in history, your children are not expected to live as long as we are. Perhaps some words from a great humanitarian is called for now:
The late Dr. John Gofman, a physician, molecular biologist and medical physicist at UC-Berkeley said: "If you pollute when you DO NOT KNOW if there is any safe dose (threshold), you are performing improper experimentation on people without their informed consent....if you pollute when YOU DO KNOW that there is no SAFE DOSE (or exposure), with respect to causing extra cases of deadly cancers or disease, then you are committing premeditated random murder! Good luck folks---only you, by banding together, can stop this!
