Gilmer Bobcats Tennis Season Ends at First Round of State

The 2016 Region 7-4A runner-up Gilmer High School Bobcats tennis squad hosted its first-ever state match last Tuesday against Grady High School.

The Grey Knights spoiled the momentum GHS had built throughout their dominant season, defeating the Bobcats 4-1.

In singles play, Bobcat Riley Hice fell to Josh Wolfe, 0-6, 0-6. Gilmer player Isaac Hensley lost to Alex Lepik 2-6, 2-6, while Dusty Ray garnered the lone Gilmer win with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Matt Wood.

Doubles matches saw Bobcats Cole Edmondson and Chandler Cantrell drop their match to Chase Masri and Kyle Mulholland 3-6, 1-6, while the Gilmer duo of Matthew Bruner and Noah Chastain lost the only set completed before the match was called to Robert Mobley and Randall Schwartz, 0-6.

Speaking on the Bobcats state appearance and the season as a whole, head GHS coach Donna Parks said, “The entire team was proud to be able to bring a round of state competition to Gilmer County this year. The boys set high expectations for themselves and did their best to achieve them. Although the outcome was not what we had wished for, the boys gave it their all and left it all on the courts. For the boys that are graduating, I know they feel like they have had a great run. For those that aren’t graduating, we look forward to moving even farther next year and hope to make these kind of years more common.”

The GHS Bobcats tennis team finish the 2016 season with a 16-4 overall record.
