Last Tuesday the Gilmer Bobcats traveled to Northwest Whitfield High School for game one of a region series with the Bruins.
In what was probably the coldest game the varsity Bobcats will play all season, they battled both the temps and a very good Bruins baseball team. Northwest jumped out to an early lead in the bottom half of the first inning on a leadoff walk by Redmond. With Bearden up to bat, Redmond worked his way around the pads on a stolen base, wild pitch, and a passed ball for a quick Bruins lead. On the following pitch, Bearden squared up on a Gilmer fastball and drove it over the right-field fence for a 2-0 score. The Bobcats sliced the lead in half at 2-1 in their half of the second but the Bruins stretched it back out to a 2 run lead in the bottom half of the second. The Cats scored their final run of the game in the top of the fifth in the 5-2 region loss. Gilmer’s first run came as Gabe Wolfson got things started on a strong double to centerfield. David Smith came in as a courtesy runner and crossed the plate on a 2 out single by Evan Frady. Frady was caught stealing to end the inning.
Defensively for the Varsity Bobcats, Frady got the start going 5.1 innings allowing 5 earned runs on 3 hits, 5 walks, and 5 strikeouts on 102 pitches. Jess Buckner threw 2/3 innings in relief to hold the Northwest Whitfield Bruins at 5 runs. Leading the Bobcats at the plate was Gabe Wolfson(2 for 2) followed by Tyler Woody(1-2, 1 run scored). The Cats finished the game with 12 K’s.
