“RED”

It’s rare when you get a self-aware, fun movie that never tries to be something its not.
And, it’s great.“Red” is one of these rare cases.

Bruce Willis plays the main retired and extremely dangerous CIA ex-spy chased by a
host of bad guys sent by the government to exterminate him.

As the movie unfolds, Willis joins up with some of his retired buddies to “get the band
back together” and take on the people who want them all dead.

Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) plays Willis’ girl who he gets into the mess by developing a
relationship with her over the phone and therefore is targeted along with him.

There are many, many flaws in “RED.” The basis of the movie is set on a relationship
that’s not really developed on screen.

The point in which the plot turns from the second to the third act is based on the fact that
Parker trips. Not to mention some more unrealistic examples.

It all works though, kind of. But, the movie is too fun to care.

In the midst of an era where new spy movies are constantly improving with CGI and
fancily turned set pieces. “RED” proves that the old dog’s old tricks can still work.

While, it may have been more interesting to see a cast of young actors doing cool things,
I commend “RED” for the attempt. And, its success.
