Lady Buccaneers Plunder Bobcats

The Gilmer Lady Bobcats fell 42-36 to the visiting Lady Buccaneers of Allatoona High School in a game that the visitors led most of the way. The Lady Buccaneers used a dearth of free throw shooting and stingy defense to lay siege to the home team Lady Bobcats.The Lady Buccaneers began the game with a 6-0 run that was answered by a 5-0 run by the home team Lady Bobcats. Gilmer struggled early with turnovers that the Lady Buccaneers took of advantage of and used to acquire a 12-8 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Buccaneers struck first in the second quarter, but a three pointer by key reserve Megan Fox cut the lead to 3 (14-11). Allatoona responded with a break away steal and basket that pushed the lead up to five. The Lady Bobcats were not able to get closer than five throughout the quarter and went into halftime down by six (22-18).

The Lady Bobcats came out with suffocating defense in the second half, holding their counterparts scoreless through the first half of the third quarter. Gilmer went on a 5-0 run which cut the lead to one (22-21) with just under four minutes left in the quarter. The Lady Bobcats nearly doubled the scoring output of the Lady Buccaneers in the third outscoring the visitors 7-4 in the quarter to go into the fourth down 26-23.

Allatoona came out in the fourth quarter in full court woman to woman defense; however, the Lady Bobcats held the Lady Buccaneers scoreless for half the quarter again and were able to take their first lead of the game on a jumper by Ansley Mulkey (27-26). The Lady Bobcats continued to score going on an 8-4 run that gave them a three point lead (33-30) with three and half minutes left in the game.

Gilmer was able to push the lead up to five (35-30), but was outscored 12-1 over the final two and half minutes of the game. The Lady Buccaneers took advantage of several Gilmer turnovers and a plethora of made free throws to secure the win.
