The Kennesaw State Owls will begin their run in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., when they take on the hosting USC Upstate Spartans in Spartanburg, S.C.The Owls (28-25, 10-10 A-Sun) are making their second consecutive appearance in the A-Sun Tournament, a double-elimination event which features the top six eligible teams in the year-end conference standings fighting for a berth in an NCAA Regional. The Black and Gold first became eligible for the postseason in 2010 after completing their four-year NCAA Division re-classification period.
Should the No. 6- seeded Owls defeat the No. 3- seeded Spartans (39-11, 11-7 A-Sun), they would play No. 2- seed Lipscomb at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. The losing team will play the loser of Wednesday’s Mercer-Campbell game at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Opening up the A-Sun Tournament with a match-up against the Spartans will be déjà-vu for the Owls, as they defeated USC Upstate in their A-Sun Tournament debut last year, edging out a 1-0 victory on the strength of a two-hit shutout by Jessica Cross.
The two squads split the regular season series, held at Bailey Park on Apr. 15, winning the first game, 3-2, in nine innings, before falling, 6-4, in the second game, in eight innings. The second contest was actually completed on Sunday, Apr. 17, after a heavy rainstorm on Friday evening halted play in the top of the eighth inning.
The A-Sun Championship will run from Wednesday, May 11, to Saturday, May 14.
