The class of 2011 graduated from Gilmer High School. The commencement exercises took place in the gym in front of a capacity crowd. The ceremony began with the pledge of allegiance led by senior class vice president, Olivia Burnett, followed by the class president, Lawson Sutton, welcoming the attendees. Sutton then led the class in singing the school Alma Mater. Sutton also read “Anyway,” a poem by Mother Teresa, for inspiration.
The Gilmer High School Chorale treated the crowd to a rendition of “Your Heart Goes With Me.” The class history was presented by Burnett.
Salutatorian, Elijah Pettit, addressed his classmates by letting them know that “getting our high school diplomas is only the beginning.” He also quoted John Wooden for inspiration.
The class gift, of signs around the school campus, was presented by Kelly Felker, the class treasurer. Hannah Kelly, the class valedictorian then gave her commencement address. She told the class that it was imperative to have someone to trust in.
Principal, Erik Hofstetter, made some brief remarks, and acknowledged faculty members and distinguished guests. The class was presented by Mrs. Nicole Lord, the senior sponsor.
Hofstetter then presided over the turning of the tassel, followed by the dismissal.
