The Gilmer Lady Bobcats hosted the All American Volleyball Camp, attended by the Lady Bobcats and the Lady Mariners of North Georgia Christian Academy. The three day affair featured All American instructors, Sherri Williams and Benavia Jenkins, both of whom played their college volleyball at the University of Florida, and have played professionally overseas.

Coach Tina Mabry, head coach of the Mariners, admitted to being a bit humbled by the high level of instruction provided by the two former Gators.

“They were able to get the girls to do things in two days, that I’ve been trying to get them to do for two months.”

Mabry was also highly impressed by the level of expertise shared by Williams and Jenkins. She felt the money spent, per student, “was well worth the money.”

The girls were taught various fundamentals and techniques throughout the camp, as well as treated to question and answer sessions, in which the campers were invited to discuss topics ranging from the game of volleyball to questions about life outside of the United States.

The instructors told stories about the recruiting process. For example, Jenkins was recruited in basketball and track. while Williams talked about almost being “hooked” by the University of Texas. They spoke of the passion fans overseas have their sports, as well as some of the exotic foods and cultures they experienced.

The camp was about team building, as much as skills and technique, according to Mabry and Peggy Densmore, head volleyball coach at Gilmer High School. Overall the campers seemed to enjoy their time spent at the camp. The head coaches were equally impressed and gave rousing reviews. One can only hope that they apply the lessons they learned to their respective upcoming fall seasons
