Scarecrow Invasion in Ellijay

Featured Stories, Festivals

ELLIJAY, GA – Scarecrows have invaded downtown Ellijay!A couple of dozen scarecrows that were crafted by merchants and citizens of Ellijay are on display along River and Main Streets and a few scarecrows also adorn the rotary.

According to Susan at Mountain Ridge Garden Center, the annual scarecrow constructing event draws people of all ages, from Cub Scouts to business owners and beyond. This year marks the third year and the participation numbers have already surpassed previous years. Last year, 70 scarecrows were made; this year, the number constructed so far is 105, and Susan expects upwards of 200. Participants apparently have realized that not only is it more fun to build your own scarecrow than to purchase one pre-made from a store, but it is also an affordable hands-on outlet for entertainment and creative expression for children and adults alike. The scarecrow building runs through October 1st; cost is 5.00 per scarecrow with construction materials included. Clothing and accessories for scarecrows are not provided, so bring your own.

Susan sends many thanks to the community for the tremendous effort and participation to make this year’s scarecrow event a success.
