On November 11th, Gilmer County paid tribute to our Nation’s veterans during a parade and ceremony on the streets of Ellijay. On the crisp, autumn day citizens and loved ones gathered to honor those who have valiantly served our country over the years, defending our freedoms and preserving our peace and liberties. During the parade, over Sousa tunes and feet marching, you could see on-lookers waving hand-sized American Flags and hear voices, young and old, chanting “Thank You” to veterans and soldiers passing by.

Following the parade, during the ceremony before the court house, Private Harrison Wentworth was recognized as Gilmer County’s newest and youngest United States Marine. Private Wentworth recently completed boot camp with 03 infantry training and will soon be serving our county on the front lines.

Then, on the 11th month on the 11th day in the 11th year of the millennium at the 11th hour at 11 minutes past the hour, two Marine Cobra Helicopters flew over the town, as the Star Spangled Banner was sung, accompanying the Cobras in their flight, rising, eagle-like in the heavens.
