In a special Board of Commissioners Meeting Friday, Commission Chairman J.C. Sanford said he has worked out a deal with Advanced Disposal allowing all convenience centers to accept certain recycled materials.These materials include, cardboard, paper and plastic. Currently, glass cannot be recycled at the center.

However, in the meeting, Sanford said that he is working on a deal for a glass recycling program. One of the ideas discussed during the meeting was the County operating its own glass recycling center. Post 2 Commissioner Danny Hall and Sanford discussed County-owned buildings that could be used for such a facility. If established, a glass recycling facility in Gilmer County could possibly prove lucrative, bringing in revenue from the other neighboring counties. One comment made, suggested that a large enough facility could take glass from ten counties, also noting that water and natural gas resources were necessary for such an operation.

But, the discussion was merely brainstorming. For now, citizens in Gilmer County can only recycle cardboard, paper, and plastic, which can be processed at all convenience centers.

The County stresses that no household trash can be put in the recycling areas. Also, The County encourages Gilmer County Citizens to recycle as much of the above.
