County to Resurface Roads in 2012

New road surfaces coming this Spring. At its December 16th Budget Hearing, The Gilmer County Board of Commissioners (BOC) passed a resolution to resurface 8.9 miles of county roads, an increase over last year’s 3.3 miles. During the meeting, the BOC approved Resolution #11-085, authorizing “the Chairman to execute the Georgia Department of Transportation contract #S013811-PR for plant mix resurfacing.” The resolution allows The Chairman to execute the contracts and send them back to the D.O.T (Department of Transportation), and then the D.O.T. Commissioner will return them to the County with a form of approval, at which point the County can begin the projects.

The move is a response to a grant request previously submitted by the County. Specifically, the grant was a LMIG (Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant), state grants limited to roads, bridges and state rights-of-way.

“We got about $30,000 more (this year) than we got last year,”

Community Development Director Jim Smith said. Smith added that last year the County received $340,000 and this year received, $370,000. Initially, though, Smith said that on behalf of the County, he requested slightly over $400,000, saying that he always asks for more than he expects to get.

According to the 2012 LMIG Roads List for Gilmer County, the following roads will be resurfaced this Spring and the cost of each project.: Gates Chapel Road ($147,164.20), Old Bucktown Road ($93,812.30), Old Parker Road ($87,371.38), River Hill or Roy Road ( $30,049.33), and Seth Hyatt Road ( $24,119.47). Also, White Oak Drive was originally on the list, but did not receive funding for the project.
