After starting the 2012 Region 7AAA Tournament in two different brackets Tuesday, Gilmer Lady Bobcats and the Pickens Dragonettes found themselves playing each other Saturday for the three seed and a chance to play in the first round of the AAA state tournament.
Lady Bobcats beat the Dragonettes 35-34. Neither team dominated the game. The two teams were evenly matched. Both teams knew a loss meant the season was over and they played that way. All out! At some points it would look like Pickens was going to pull away and then a quick three pointer from Jenna Parks and Bailey Charles for 2 and a foul and Gilmer was right back in it. This was the match up for the entire game.

Both team played a hard press game. A lot of full court press, a low scoring defensive game. Pickens was behind 35-34 with 17 seconds to play, after moving the ball down the court and out of bounds on Gilmer, Pickens in bounded the ball with 12 seconds, put up a shot that missed. Getting the rebound, Sarah Smith of Pickens, put up the last shot of the game and missed. Game over.

Team FYN Sports caught up with Lady Cats Coach Horton after the game. Coach still had his game face on and was all business. “It was a tough one,” he said. He had no time to get excited about the win as he was headed out the door going to scout the Lady Cats next opponent in Gainesville. Lady Cats would play the winner of the three seed game between Chestatee and North Hall.

The Gilmer Lady Cats, three seed from the 7AAA tournament, will travel to play the Chestatee Lady War Eagles, three seed from 8AAA tournament. The game will take place next Friday, February 24 at Chestatee high school at 7 P.M.

This will be the first round of the AAA State tournament. Team FYN Sports will see you there Lady Cat fans.
