This morning the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce was made aware of a potential new scam that has made its way into our area.

Check Scam hits local area:

Local law enforcement officials ask all businesses to be vigilant in the receipt of checks, typically delivered by UPS or FedEx that arrive from an out of town account. A note with the check asks the business to deposit the check “on our account”. Please be sure that an exact account is given or that the check can be matched to an existing customer. Law enforcement believes that shortly after the check arrives that a call will come in stating that the check was sent in error and asking for a refund. Meanwhile, the existing check will be returned on a non-existent account or for insufficient funds.
