Hello! Are There Any Christians Reading This? (Where Are My Defenders?)

I’m really curious. The last three weeks I have presented articles about the Church of Latter Day Saints, the Mormons. The articles got dozens of comments, basically all from Mormons. Where were mainline Christians? Does everyone agree with the Mormons? Does everyone disagree with me? Do only Mormons read my articles? I can’t figure it out. Where is everyone?I don’t really need defenders but I did assume that some pastor, Christian Bible student, or a non Mormon, who is familiar with Mormon theology, would join in the discussion. No one did. Surely, there must be some reader out there to support my side of the conversation. It’s not too late.

The Mormons who did respond were civil and should be commended for their gracious attitude. The bottom line is that we are just going to disagree on doctrine. But, when the Trinity is denied, for example, we have to part company. Mormons admittedly do not believe in the Trinity. Throughout the articles I emphasized that the readers needed to draw their own conclusions. Readers must decide where the truth lies.

My purpose in writing these articles was not to single out the Mormons. It was only because, as was the case in 1960 with the election of JFK, religion is, once again, an issue. America was then concerned about a Catholic becoming president. Today, the concern is about a Mormon becoming president.

The truth is that most Christians do not understand Mormon theology at all. Most do not know that the founder of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith, ran for the presidency himself in 1844. He was murdered. His religion was a major issue. One’s beliefs can make one rich, make one controversial, make one popular, or get one killed. What we believe is vitally important to our lives.

Mitt Romney is a very prominent Mormon and he just may be the next President of the United States. Voters need to know who he is and what he believes. What he believes will affect how he runs his administration. We all act on our beliefs if we truly believe them. How can we not? It is only because of beliefs that many will vote for President Obama and many will vote for Mitt Romney.

Can anyone argue that President Obama’s agenda is not fueled by his personal beliefs? I don’t think that argument is defensible.

I’ll leave you with this thought. Mormons really do know what they believe. Do we? Can we defend our faith as well as they do theirs?
