Don’t Turn Back

After traveling through the night, by train, bus, and a long flight; tired from lack of sleep, irregular meals, multiple time changes, and carrying the ever-present backpack; and out of sorts from long lines, official questions, and scanned finger-prints; the question is sure to present itself…“Is anyone going to be waiting for me?”

Emails and phone calls have provided some assurance that proper arrangements have been made. But days and weeks have passed since the confirmations were given. If no one is there waiting, can I drag this luggage around as I try to find a taxi; and can I trust a cab driver in a strange place to give me good advice about a hotel and take me safely there? Or should I just lay down on the floor and spend another sleepless night, and maybe book a flight home in the morning?

And if someone is waiting for me, I wonder who it is? How will I recognize them? Will we be able to connect here in all this confusion?

After yet another official determines that you really have nothing to declare and waves toward the exit door, you’re suddenly outside in the hot night air, where folks are crushed against the metal barrier looking expetantly at the throng exiting the international terminal. Masses of people, noise, everyone apparently holding or waving a placard with the names of those sought.

And then you see The Smile. You recognize The Face. You embrace The Person. He’s been standing in the crowd, eagering looking for ages just for you.

And suddenly, in the moment of the heartfelt greeting, the strong handshake, the Christian hug, and the bright smile in the dark face, you know you were wanted, expected, anticipated. That while you were struggling to just make it, someone was working to make you welcome.

And you’re glad you persevered; stayed the course. He was waiting. Now the best is yet to come…

Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. Hebrews 10:35-36 (ESV)
