Friday’s Free Agent Frenzy Update

Opinion, Team FYN Sports

For those sports fan that are deeply enamored with the Major League All-Star game coming up shortly, and those just counting down until football season, the NBA’s annual free agent frenzy has begun in a big way. While the biggest news nationally maybe Nash to Hollywood and Deron Williams staying put on Jay-Z and Kayne’s thrown, locally Hawks fans have been dancing in the streets thanks to new general manger, Danny Ferry’s, furious finagling.Ferry, in eight days on the job (only one more than it took the big guy upstairs to complete creation) Ferry ferreted “Just Better Than Average“ Joe Johnson’s massive contract ($90 million owed over the next four years) and Marvin “It’s Not My Fault They Didn’t Take Chris Paul or Deron” Williams for more cap space than a bald man (via expiring contracts) and Devin Harris, an All-Star caliber point guard.

Ferry cleared almost $76 million overall, and $30 million for next summer alone. That is amazing, especially since Joe’s albatross of a contract was crippling the franchise. Notice I keep talking about the contract. Joe the player was pretty good, and I would love to have him, but not at that price. The New York Post’s headline read:

“Nets Steal Johnson.”

Note to the Post, if one steals something and has to pay $90 million, one is bad at stealing. Hawks fans say,

“Talk to us in four years when the Nets are paying $20 million to a 32 year old who is scoring single digits in playoff games.”

We have big money to throw at Dwight Howard or Chris Paul in 2013, both of whom will be free agents. It’s obvious there’s a new sheriff in town, and the Atlanta “Lack of” Spirit have been told to sit down, shut up, and let Danny do his business.

Now as I mentioned earlier the national media has been salivating over Steve Nash signing with the rival Lakers and Deron Williams teaming up with “six time All-Star” Joe Johnson. Of course “As Dwight Turns” is permeating the coverage as well. Dwight should never have signed the one year extension and now he’s mad. I’m glad he did though, because otherwise we might not have got ridden Joe’s contract.

Nash in LA makes them a legit contender again. Yes Bynum needs a comb and some sense. Yes Pau Gasol is softer than wet baby excrement, despite his angry face and scruffy beard; and yes Hobe shoots too much. However, with Nash dishing dimes (he lead the lead in assists again for the umpteenth time at 1,000 years old) the Lakers will score, and score some more. Nash also makes the Lakers a little harder to root against.

I think the Nets not only got bamboozled by Danny Ferry, but are too focused on Dwight Howard. Brook Lopez is in house, plus they now have a “six time All-Star” to team with “D-Will.” Why not roll the dice with what you have?

The biggest loser so far seems to be the Dallas Mavericks, who lost both Jason Kidd and Jason Terry to the Knicks and Celtics respectively. The Mavs elected not to resign Tyson Chandler and other contributors from the championship team in order to save up for free agency this summer. They’ve so far gotten squat. Looks like dark days ahead for Dirk and company.

Now to continue dancing the jig I’ve been dancing since hearing about Ferry’s finagling. It’s just so nice to actually believe that management has clue.
