The Gilmer Lady Bobcats volleyball team opened its season and the Donna Parks head coaching era with a closely fought 3-0 loss to the Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats. The visitors swept the home team Lady “Cats” 25-19, 25-17, and 25-22.Game one began with the home team Lady “Cats” running out to a 5-2 lead, thanks to several mistakes by the visitors and a kill from Gilmer’s Britton Farlow. The visiting “Cats” quickly tied the game with a 3-0 run.
Gilmer’s Cheyenne Frady’s tip kill gave Gilmer a 6-5 lead. Two consecutive scores by OLM gave the visitors their first lead of the day, 7-6. Jenna Parks’ kill tied the game at 7-7. A 9-2 OLM run lead to Donna Parks using her first time out, with her team down 16-9.
An 8-3 run by OLM had the visitors sitting at game point; however the home team Lady “Cats” refused to “go quietly into that good night.” Down 24-12, GHS responded with a 7-0 run, including three blocks for kills by Tiana Longino; however a dig attempt that went out of bounds ended the set and gave OLM the 25-19 win.
Game two kicked off with the visitors scoring the first two points of the game. After a failed return by OLM, Frady’s kill tied the game at 2-2. The game continued with the same back and forth pace until both teams reached an 8-8 tie. OLM went on a 5-0 run, which led to Parks calling her second time out of the day.
OLM lead 13-8 after the time out, and continued to heat up even after GHS’ time out, outscoring the home team, 12-9 the rest of the game.
The closest game of the day was the third and final game. The game was back and forth throughout the entire contest. With the score 9-8 in OLM’s favor, the visitors went on a 7-2 run that resulted in another Parks called time out.
Down 16-10, GHS responded with an 8-2 run, capped by a block/kill from Longino. OLM won the set and consequently the game, 25-22.
