Gilmer Bobcats Start Season with 3 Wins

Gilmer Bobcats 38 Southeast Whitfield Raiders 10
First team defense was perfect for eight quarters but that would change during the first quarter against the Southeast Whitfield Raiders.
The Raiders opening drive resulted in a touchdown. The Raiders ran up the middle through the Bobcat defense like it did not exist. With 9:07 to play in the first quarter the Bobcats found themselves down 7-0. Coach Wesley Tankersley immediately pulled his defense together to try to get their heads back into the game.

The Bobcats’ offense answered the Raiders with an 80 yard touchdown drive, that resulted in a Tyler Bertolini rushing touchdown. Bobcats quarterback Marlen Hensley moved the offense with completed passes to Conner Webber and Cameron Kephart. Hensley showed control of his offense. He is patient in the pocket. He doesn’t rush the play. Hensley has thrown no interceptions in his first three games.

The first quarter couldn’t end fast enough for Coach Tankersley. With the Raiders moving the ball again on the Bobcat defense, Tankersley needed the time between quarters to settle his defense down. He passionately talked to them about getting their heads in the game.

The Raiders started the second quarter threatening in Bobcat territory. Jason Dover delivered a bone crushing tackle on the quarterback and with Colt Henderson’s touchdown saving tackle- the Bobcats’ defense held the Raiders to a 32 yard field goal. Although the Raiders were up 10-7 the Bobcats’ defense was back in the game and that would be the last points allowed for the night.

With the offense moving the ball, rushing for a total 339 yards and passing for 129 yards the highlight of the night was a new school record with a Manny Lopez 44 yard field goal. The old record was 39 yards. Lopez also had five extra points for the night.

In the first three games of the season the Bobcats have outscored their opponents 114-16. The Gilmer Bobcats host the Dalton Catamounts Friday Sepmtember, 21st. Dalton is 2-1 for the season. Dalton is in the AAAA region 7B.
