Relationships

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. After this, there were relationships. If you think about it relationships are life. Relationships are basically all there is in life. We can’t avoid them even if we wanted to. Therefore, it is important that we have the kind of relationships that God wants for us.The most important relationship, of course, is our relationship with God Himself. If we fall short here, we will fall short in all other relationships. If we are not right with God we won’t be right with others or even ourselves.

Once we have established our relationship with God then one of the most important rules in our other relationships is not to be unequally yoked. This is critical. Scripture says, “Do not be bound together (“unequally yoked” KJV) with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness (2 Cor.6:14 NASB)?”

I believe that this applies to business relationships as well as personal ones. I don’t mean that we don’t do business with an unbeliever but rather that we would not go into partnership with one. Where is the common ground?

As Christians, we should be equally yoked or bound together with the right people. When we marry, it is imperative that we are equally yoked. A believer should never marry an unbeliever. A Christian should never marry into another faith.

You may find this controversial but my personal belief is that we even have to be very careful about marrying into other Christian denominations. The reason is that even within Christianity there are some very wide disagreements about doctrine.

For example, some denominations believe that the Gifts of the Spirit are not valid today. Others go as far as to think they are not of God at all, maybe even demonic. So, one can see the potential problems that could arise when serious doctrinal differences are present.

In conclusion, we must be careful with whom we form alliances. Being unequally yoked can cause a lot of problems. It can cause much pain within relationships and can lead to sin.
