There is, without a doubt, a war being waged on Christmas, and not just Christmas, Christianity too. There are many people, churches, and groups fighting back, trying to reestablish the former meaning and glory of the holiday. It may be a losing battle. Let’s consider some of the dynamics surrounding the war on Christmas.

This war is better understood when we back up and look at some facts. First, America is not what it used to be worldview wise. As recently as the 1950s America operated from a pretty pervasive Biblical worldview. The Bible was an accepted standard of right and wrong. The Bible, the church, and Christians were accepted as part of the main fabric of American society.

Back then, when there was an issue with national interest, the media would call upon people like Billy Graham or Jerry Falwell to evaluate and offer guidance, godly guidance. Today, more often than not they call upon those with no spiritual substance. They prefer not to have spiritual answers. Often the media will call upon those from the radical left, many who are decidedly and obviously antichristian.

I had made the argument for decades that America is a Christian nation. I can no longer make that argument. We were established and accepted as a Christian nation. But now, we, as a nation, as a government, are rejecting Christianity specifically and in every way imaginable. The very foundation of our nation’s success and glory, Christianity, is now being discarded for secularism, humanism, socialism, and anything else man can think of to avoid acknowledging Him. We seem to no longer need or want God. We can just “do it ourselves.” We’ll see about that.

There was a scientist who one day challenged God. He told God that we didn’t need Him anymore. He told God that man now had the ability to create human life so He challenged God to a contest to see who could create a human being the fastest. God agreed. The scientist then bent down and grabbed a handful of dirt. God said, “Wait a minute. You make your own dirt.”

So, I encourage us to not be too surprised about the assault on Christmas. I’m surprised it isn’t worse and it certainly could be. I encourage us to continue to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. I encourage us to not join in the secularization process. Don’t buy “Holiday Trees.” Go somewhere where they sell “Christmas Trees.” Send Christmas cards with a “Jesus” theme, not a St. Nick theme. Be sure to commend retailers that uphold the true Christmas spirit.

And, even though the odds are great against reversing the current trend anytime soon, there is always the hope that God will intervene. He could send another Great Awakening. Let’s pray He does.
