Preconceptions Grim for Pacific Rim: Job Well Done in the End

First let me apologize for my review coming later than Amanda Bynes intervention, but I’ve been busier than a babysitter at the Duggars’ house. That being said, I have to admit that I had no intention of seeing “Pacific Rim” as I believed it would be closer to “Sharknado” and not definitely not worth me spending money on. I could not have been more wrong, “Pacific Rim” is AWESOME. It is action packed from the first scene until the last. I was reminded of “Ninja Assassin” where there was action throughout and just enough plot to explain what was going on, as opposed to weighing down the movie.

The movie begins in the near future. The Earth has seen a series of attacks from “Kaijus” huge aliens that have risen from the Pacific Ocean due to an interdimensional portal. The human response is to build Jaegers, huge robots that are piloted by two people whose brains have been interlinked in order to “share the load” that proved to be exhausting for one person.

The movie opens with Raliegh Becket, played by Charlie Hunnan whom I will probably refer to as Raliegh Becket as this role will be the one referred to when people see Hunnan and say, “that’s the guy from Pacific Rim,” narrating the first time he saw a Kaiju and how he and his brother became pilots of the Jaeger known as “Gipsy Danger.” Spoiler Alert: the Jaeger is not fashioned after, nor designed with parts from, a New York City cab, that’s just the name of the robot.

Spoiler Alert: The brother dies. I’m sorry, but A: “Pacific Rim” has been out for a while and 2: this happens before the credits even role, so I feel that it’s okay to share, plus I clearly wrote “Spoiler Alert.” It’s not like I told you that Superman kills Zod in “Man of Steel.”

Hey if you don’t know already then you’re not a real nerd and don’t actually care so, (sticks tongue out, blows raspberries). (Wife shakes head, looks at children with “too late now” expression).

Fast forward a few years, and the Jaeger project is all but dead, as humans have become “good at it” when it comes to winning the war with the Kaiju. Instead of the Jaegers the politicians have decided to build walls to keep the Kaiju out.

Spoiler Alert: That doesn’t work. The Kaiju attacks become more frequent and more severe leading to Stringer Bell, the leader of the now underground Jaeger program, to recruit Beckett back to pilot “Gypsy Danger.”

Now enters Charlie Day as “Kaiju groupie” slash world class biologist that along with the British version of Sheldon Cooper, figure out some much needed information about the Kaiju invasion.

Spoiler Alert: Hellboy has a small cameo as a particularly unscrupulous black market Kaiju body parts dealer. It is HIGH COMEDY!!!

I must admit, that if not for Swamp Thang’s desire to see this movie, I never would have considered going to “Godzilla vs. Voltron” as I described it numerous times beforehand; however, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised that not only was it not terrible, but it was one of the best movies I’ve seen all year.

Yes it has robots and aliens and not much else, but who cares? It is definitely no boring, nor cheesy. Its robots fighting aliens with fantastic special effects. What more does one need?
