Lady “Cats” Clip “Nettes” at Net: GHS Volleyball Sweeps JV and Varsity Home Matches Vs. Region Rival PHS

The Gilmer High School Lady Bobcats varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams faced the region rival, Pickens High School Dragonettes, sweeping both matches, with the JV winning in three sets, and the Varsity sweeping in two.The junior varsity matches were all hotly contested. Game one saw the “Nettes” race out to a 10-5 lead, before the Lady “Cats” caught up at 13-13. The game continued go back and forth, with Pickens picking up a 25-24 win.

Game two opened with Gilmer scoring via a kill from Kali Malham, however the “Nettes” responded with a 6-1 run that gave the visitors an 8-2 lead; however, much like game one, the Lady “Cats” clawed to a 13-13 tie.

True to form, the two teams continued to trade leads and ties, until three straight GHS points, including two game sealing Aces, from Briana Hall, gave Gilmer a 25-22 set victory.

The tie breaking game three set was back and forth until a late game Gilmer run gave the JV Lady “Cats” the win. It featured four ties and three lead changes. Three of the ties came in the first three points.

With the game tied at 3-3 the “Nettes” attacked the net with a 5-2 run for a 10-5 lead. The Lady “Cats” came back with a 7-2 run that tied the game at 12-12. A PHS failed return, followed by another Ace from Malham, sparked a 13-7 run that saw Emily Sanford’s game winning kill seal the deal, giving Gilmer a 25-19 set win, and a 2-1 JV match victory.

The varsity Lady “Cats” came with claws out, as the game opened with a Darby Herald kill that gave Gilmer a 1-0 lead. Pickens responded with a kill that sparked a 6-2 run, that gave the “Nettes” a .

The Lady “Cats” caught the Dragonettes’ tails’ quickly, with a 5-2 run that tied the game at 7-7. An Ace from Britton Farlow put GHS up 8-7, however, a serve out of bounds tied the game again.

The teams traded points via errors, until a kill from Brooke Sims followed by an Ace from Harmony Malham put the Lady “Cats” up 13-9. The teams traded points until a Dig for a Kill from Malham, followed by and Ace from Farlowe, put Pickens behind six, 21-15, forcing a PHS time out.

The Dragonettes heated up coming out of the time out, going on a 3-0 run that cut the lead in half, and forced a Lady “Cats” time out. The Lady “Cats” came out of the time out with a 4-1 game sealing run, that featured a both a critical kill and an amazing Ace from Malham.

Game two opened with an Ace from Gilmer’s Sarah Lambert, followed by a kill by Sims. The 2-0 GHS lead quickly ballooned to a 10-1 lead. A 5-1 “Nettes” run cut the home team’s lead to 11-6; however, a kill by Malham lead to a 13-1 run, that saw three straight Aces from Lambert.

Pickens picked up the pace, and cut the lead to 24-13 with a 4-0 run. Jenna Parks secured the victory with a kill that gave Gilmer the 25-13 set win and the 2-0 match win.
