Charlie Waters : Obituary

Mr. Charlie Columbus Waters, age 89 of Ellijay, Georgia passed on Thursday August 29th, 2013 at the North Georgia Medical Center. Mr. Waters was born on April 21st, 1924 to his late parents Lester and Canzady Withrow Waters in Ellijay, Georgia. He was a graduate of Gilmer High School, Class of 1943. Charlie served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II and also worked as a rural mail carrier for the USPS. He was a deacon and a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for 77 years. He owned and operated Thriftown Supermarket. Charlie was involved with many community and civic organizations including the Gideon’s International, Ellijay Lion’s Club, Past master and 50 year mason of Oak Bowery Lodge #81 and a member of the Yaarab Shrine. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Douthit and Sue Miller.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 3:00pm on Sunday September 1st, 2013 from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Edmund Miller, Rev. Dan Rosser and Rev. Ruben Smith officiating. Music and Singing will be by Mr. Loy Jarrett and Mrs. Karen Buchanan. Graveside interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The Deacons of Pleasant Grove will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Gideon’s Ellijay Camp, Men’s Sunday School Class of Pleasant Grove, Kenneth Walker, Ron Evans, Bear Patterson, Dennis Benson, Jerry Weaver, JT Luttrell, Mike Garrett, Mark Garrett, Dana Brockington, Hugh Hudson, Thomas Jordan, Ronald May, Mack Logan, Johnny Pinson, James Withrow, David Pierce, and Danny Strickland.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Catherine Osborn Waters of Ellijay; Edmund and Jeannie Miller; Charmet Garrett, Mitzi and Mark Miller, Cathie and Hugh Hudson, Mary Mayes and Thomas Jordan, Yvette Osborn, Cindy and Dana Brockington, Mike and Vickie Garrett, and Mark and Mindy Garrett and numerous family and friends.

The family is requesting in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Gideon’s International Ellijay Camp at P.O. Box 1704 Ellijay, Georgia 30540, the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund at 115 Pleasant Grove Road Ellijay, Georgia 30540 or to a charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Waters.

The family is receiving friends on Saturday August 31st, 2013 from 4:00pm-9:00pm at the Logan Funeral Home.
